A video worth watching

As a feminist who totally supports PETA's use of nudity in anti-cruelty campaigns, I was glad to see that Kathy of What Do I Know? found this great video which provides an overview of why PETA does what it does. The video also just happens to contain footage of Governor George W. Bush during his campaign for the presidency, and his remarks pretty much sum up how most Americans feel when they are confronted with their support of factory farming.

I realise this video was made several years ago, but it really doesn't respond in any way to the feminist objection to the `I'd rather go naked' and related campaigns, viz., whatever good these campaigns do for non-human animals, they portray women as sex objects. It's true that women are being objectified by these campaigns for more laudatory ends than, say, selling beer, but that doesn't remove the objectification.

Simply put, the problem is the objectification, not the outlandish street theatre or civil disobedience.

I understand your objection, but, as I see it, it is a matter of context, and within the context PETA is using, I don't consider it objectification.

I'm afraid I don't understand your objection to my objection (heh). If we were talking about satire, sarcasm, or other forms of irony, then I could see how the context could make a difference. But all we've got here is the simple equation of naked (conventionally beautiful) women's bodies = sex = attention for the campaign, taken at face value. What's the difference in context when this equation is used in a campaign for the ethical treatment of non-human animals from when it's used to sell cheap booze?

They also use naked men in their ads. There's on in Satya magazine that has men, fyi.

As for the difference, what's the difference between having naked women in a nude photo or painting and having naked women (or men) in a PETA ad?

And there is an intrinsic ironic context, i.e., We can't get your attention--what do you want, naked women?

Speaking of irony...you might find this amusing.

Yeah...I like it!
