Sexist language here to stay
There couldnt' be a hipper, more progressive group than the Film Independent Spirit Awards people, right? Yet the announcer of the awards event introduced Maggie Gyllenhall as the event's honorary "chairman." Because old sexist habits don't die hard--they just don't die.

Happened at the Oscars last night too. When Tom Cuise described Sherry Lansing, winner of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, as the former chairman of Paramount Studios.

Also at the Oscars, Jennifer Lopez, one of the presenters, was introduced as something incredibly awful and akin to "easy on the eyes," but I'm blanking on it now. "Jennifer Lopez, actress, producer, and little minx." I practically spit out my juice, but I've gratefully forgotten it.
And I say it every year, but what in the heck is the purpose of the skinny women hanging around in the background? If that's not sexist, I don't know what is. They have no purpose except as adornment.

One could also ask: What is the purpose of the Oscars? They have very little to do with quality in the film arts. In fact, of all the film awards, they are probably the least related to quality. There is also a longstanding policy of discrimination in the nomination process of the Best Supporting Actress category (unforunately, our female actors don't have the guts to stand up and protest it). So getting rid of skinny women in the background would be a nice beginning, but...
