Chris Matthews' sexism is breathtaking

Had Matthews gone on and on about African Americans last night the way he did about Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and House Speaker-to be Nancy Pelosi, he would not have a job this morning. Instead, he is free to come back tonight and hurl some more insults around.

Matthews pondered how difficult Pelosi would find it to be an authority figure, since she is a woman. Some men's teeth will be on edge, he said, at the sound of a woman's voice rallying the troops and giving commands. "How can she do that without screaming or sounding grating (substitute "shrill" or "strident"--the two favorites--here)?"

As if women are not capable of making decisive comments without screaming or being "shrill." As if Pelosi has not had the House minority leadership position for a long time now.

Matthews then went on to one of his favorite subjects, Sen. Clinton, whom he obviously despises. What, he wondered, is she going to do about her husband? She makes an acceptance speech, and there he is, just standing behind her, smiling and applauding.

I'm not making these things up. Matthews contempt for women is pretty thinly veiled at this point, but he is never called on it. hardball@msnbc.com and viewerservices@msnbc.com are the network's email addresses; I, for one, plan to call him on it.

Was it also Matthews going on about how great it was that so many Irish candidates were winning? I'm afraid I was listening to the TV and watching the internet, so I can't say for sure who was harping on the Irish thing, but whoever it was it was totally out of line.

Whew, amen to both of you (a very secular amen, I promise!) I was at a "returns party" last night so I kind of tuned in and out, but Matthews was really over the top in several comments I heard.

Whooops, sorry about the double comment dip here, but I meant to mention that the first sentence of your post might be overly optimistic. Maybe it's a function of me living in SC, but it seems like I heard some fairly awful "MSM" comments about Ford, Steele, and Deval Patrick floating around last night that didn't get challenged either.

I was lucky enough not to hear them. I don't even know why I was watching TV--not enough tennis on Versus.

CM and company also went on and on about how great it was that people didn't lie to the pollsters in the Ford race like they had done in the Doug Wilder race, but felt comfortable enough in their decision (about being racist) to tell the truth when polled. He then proceeded to bloviate about how this was "progress" for African-Americans.

I was struck throughout the evening by the whiteness and maleness of his panels.

And this was on the 'good cop' channel, MSNBC.

SHEESH!

I find MSNBC only slightly (because of KO, and he has some sexism issues) less right-wing than CNN, which I find more offensive than Fox.
