I just wanted to cry after I read that. But I see that's it's the perfect example of how male standards of sport and hegemonic constructions of femininity come together to create these bizarre expectations for women's sports. And of course, Diane, I have to say that my initial skepticism regarding Hingis's behavior/comments was not so misplaced after all. I felt for Mauresmo and applaud HER maturity. Maybe I should screen print a t-shirt about Hingis and homophobia and wear it to the Open next week. And make one for Mauresmo too!
I cannot find anywhere else that Hingis said anything derogatory about Amelie. My guess--and I'm certainly willing to be wrong--is the The Observer people took some quotation out of context to stir things up.
Everything I have heard Hingis say about Amelie since her return has been positive.
