That was the headline on ESPN's website. Mind you, this is women's tennis they're talking about: All of the teams are about as "undermanned" as you can get.

The unconscious gendered language that exists in sport is amazing. In very few other arenas (no pun intended) of life would such things go so unnoticed--or rather, uncommented upon.
And it's not just ESPN or other sport news outlets--athletes themselves turn a deaf ear to gendered language. One of the most egregious examples is the Ironman competition in the sport of triathlon. Since it's earliest days Ironmans have had female competitors yet almost everyone--I do know a few perturbed triathletes--don't question this. And if someone--like me usually--brings up such examples, athletes usually respond that it doesn't matter or doesn't affect things like equity in sports. It's infuriating.
