It isn't enough that Juan Rodriguez, the parent who originally objected to the book, tell his own kids not to read it.
He has enough rectitude to decide the issue for every kid in the Miami-Dade district.
People like this make me want to puke. Would it be too much to ask folks like that to move to a place like China, where they don't have to contend with the possibility of encountering an independent thought? Obviously the demands of an open, inclusive society are too high, eh?

It's one of those issues in which it is easy for people to overlook the greater good. I would guess that many of the books in school libraries are still factually corrupt and some are sexist. I would love to see them get carted out, but banning is not on my agenda. Parents discussing the contents of books with their kids is on my agenda.
Still, I understand the urge. Right now, some liberals are upset that the ACLU is representing Fred Phelps, or that it has represented Nazis. But short of activities that cause concrete harm to individuals, free speech is free speech. Lose yours, and eventually, I'll lose mine.
That seems to be a hard concept for many people to grasp.
