Memo to ESPN
People who do not care about tennis are not watching the French Open. Curious non-tennis fans who want to see Roger Federer will more likely tune in at a later date in the tournament. In the meantime, for those of us who do love tennis, there are some very interesting matches going on all over the stadium, but we can't watch them because we are stuck watching Roger play 6-1 sets against someone who is lucky to just be standing there.
I like Fed as much as the next person; I am a fan. But please, show us some tennis!

My gripes with ESPN go so far deeper than this that I wasn't even going to bring it up but I am glad you did. ESPN seems to have adopted this strange philosophy about staying with a match for its entirety. Oh wait--I mean staying with a men's match for its entirety. OK the Nalbandian-Gasquet match today was good--at certain points. But the whole second set of Mauresmo's match was good tennis of which we only got to see about 30 minutes. And I couldn't believe they are airing the Sharapova match on tape delay. I mean if they are ever going to appeal to the casual tennis fans it's with Sharapova. (Not that that's an especially good reason to air it live--I am just pointing out the illogical nature of ESPN's choices.)

I sometimes wonder what rhyme or reason is behind these decisions. It so happened I wanted to see as much of the Nalbandian match as I could, but yes, I wanted to see the second set of the Mauresmo match. And you're right: airing the Sharapova match on tape delay seemed strange. (On the other hand, the masses who want to see Sharapova probably aren't that interested in the score.)
Every time there is a major tournament, ESPN does this kind of thing.
