Good news about animal protection

Last month, Kansas passed "Scruffy's Law," (named for a bull terrier who was murdered) which makes animal cruelty a felony rather than a misdemeanor. Nebraska has just passed a law which strenghens the state's regulation of puppy mills and makes it illegal to sell puppies or kittens under eight weeks old. In Maine, a law was passed that allows animals to be included in domestic violence violence cases.

A man here got sentenced to jail time for dragging his horse behind his truck until the poor horse's hoofs were bleeding and it finally fell down and the man kept pulling taking off most of its hide until finally someone called the police. The horse was treated by vet and finally after almost a year, it was released to the care of a rescue shelter. In Vegas, the racing dogs were just killed, that is if the owner wasn't making money on them. Just killed.

Racing dogs have traditionally been killed after they stopped racing. Now there are a couple of organizations that put up racing greyhounds for adoption.
