More than half of Americans reject evolution

A Gallup poll released today shows that more than half of Americans reject evolution and believe that "God created man exactly as the Bible describes it." 25% of the people surveyed with post-graduate degrees reject evolution. Obviously, this is the result of brainwashing by liberal professors.

You are correct, Molly; that was careless proof-reading on my part.

I have made the correction. Unfortunately, it doesn't make me feel any better about the survey results.

I'm curious why our government wants the people of this country to be so utterly ignorant and stupid.

Plants and animals evolve independently of any magic being in the sky, just as an unseen force keeps those plants and animals stuck to the surface of the planet. Would anyone argue against gravity?

I attribute the increasing dumbing-down of my fellow citizens to be (mostly) directly attributable to our under-funded public schools, staffed by poorly-paid, incompetent teachers. The lack of basic understanding of science, of how to think and reason, and a dearth of desire to learn will only do one thing to this country.

We will not grow "closer to god" or "become more moral" (whatever that means). We will eventually lose our competitive edge, as scientific research and innovation moves to countries where rigorous thinking is encouraged. We already hamper our Universities by locking out the foreign grad students that typically do most of the work. How long before our Universities and Research Facilities are considered second- or third-rate?

Up until less than 65 years ago, the "language of science" was German. All the real journals and papers were written in German, because that's where the giants of science lived (Heisenberg, Einstein, von Braun, Planck, etc). After WWII, the language of science became English. If we're not careful, in another 65 years, the language of science will change again.

In Bryan's comment, he made a cogent argument for his position, but in his opening sentence he asked why the government "wants the people of this country to be so utterly ignorant and stupid".

A one-word answer, even if a bit over-stated, might be "control". The religious right is flexing its new-found muscle in its last-ditch attempt to maintain control of the vast unwashed throngs who hold the power to be a very big problem, should they become independent thinkers.

Everything is a threat to the neoconservative right, especially truth. If they let proven scientific principles go unchallenged theologically, they lose the veracity of their contention that the Bible (and their narrow interpretation of it) is 'the truth, the way and the light'.

What better way of accomplishing this than to weave the tenets of 'intelligent design' into a pragmatic assessment of origins plausible enough to capture the minds (and therefore the hearts) of a population already struggling with their faith?

Science doesn't matter to these people any more than intellectual curiosity. In fact, they'd prefer it if we didn't think too much.

Everybody sing: "How you gonna keep them down on the farm, now that they've seen L.A.?"

I agree with you to an extent, Bob. Yes, the neo-conservative movement wants this to happen, but not because they believe any of the Bible-fueled theories. They are using the religious right as a tool and the religious right is too stupid to see it.
