Museum gel and museum putty are used in museums to anchor things down. But anyone can buy it. A tiny bit does the trick and it is reusable, so one jar lasts forever. For most home jobs, the gel is sufficient (the putty is super-strength).
The gel does leave a residue, but it can be cleaned up. It does not damage surfaces.

I have never heard of this museum gel! Learn something new every day!
It might be an option for me, since my dog has a large sweeping tail. Drinks on the coffee table are never a good idea around here!
