Just another coincidence

Last month, George W. Bush apppointed David Sanborn as director of the U.S. Maritime Administration. Who is David Sanborn? Well, he is a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy, and he is the man who runs DP World's European and Latin American operations. DP World, as you probably know by now, is the Dubai Company selected by the White House to oversee some of our major ports.

It turns out that Sanborn is not the only Bush administration official connected to DP World. Treasury Secretary John Snow, whose department led the panel that signed off on the DP deal, was chairman of the CSX Rail firm that sold its own port operations to DP in 2004.

Now Diane, you know that it's just one of those funny federal co-inky-dinks.

Just like all of those patriotic oil barrons taking the time out of their busy schedules to help that nice Mr. Chaney write his energy policy.

Move along, move along, nothing to see here.

Only one problem with this conspiracy. The Dubai company in question wasn't "selected." They bought the British firm that had been running the ports.

CNN:

Dubai Ports World recently acquired the British-based firm that currently directs commercial operations at those ports, Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation. The takeover by Dubai Ports World means that it will be in charge of those operations.

Too close for comfort, nonetheless, david boyd does make a good point. Because it was a sale and not a slection, the Sanborn/DP World connection is not an indictment of shenannigans. It may now be a conflict of interest, however.

I don't see how it changes anything, though people are arguing that it does. Whether the Dubai company was directly selected or "just happened" to buy the Brit company, it has too many letters to spell "coincidence."

Don't forget the Carlyle Group and their possible involvement.
