Chinese journalist serving 10-year sentence for sending email

Shi Tao, a Chinese journalist, wrote for Dangdai Shang Bao (Contemporary Business News), a Chinese Daily. On April 30, he was convicted of sending foreign-based websites the text of an internal message that the Chinese government had sent to his newspaper to warn journalists of possible unrest that could result from the return of certain dissidents on the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Shi concurs that he sent the email, but denies that he is guilty of "illegally providing state secrets to foreign entitites."

It's a sad day in China, but you know that the freedoms there are compromised, but here in the USA, you don't expect such a thing, but if Bush is allowed his reign of terror, well it can happen right here. Any of us are subject to jail time or at the least harrassment. People read about China and shake their heads and are so blinded by our so called democracy that they don't see that we are in as bad a shape as they are in China. All it takes is a whim of a nut case for a president to decide to read our blogs, listen in on our phones, or spy through what ever other spy devices they have and I'm sure there are many. It's scarry.
