On "having it all"

The "having it all" concept has made me angry for years, and I have never seen it better exposed for the pile of garbage it is than at Stone Court.

Isn't the idea of women raising children and not working a post-industrial revolution development? Before that, whether a society was agrarian or hunter/gatherer, my understanding is that both women and men "worked" for the survival of the family. Childcare occurred within the context of the parents' daily duties until children were old enough to learn and perform appropriate tasks.
It just struck me as odd, historically, - the idea that raising children is a job for any one person is just wacked.

Good point, Anon. And, of course, the idea got a huge boost after World War II, when American servicemen splashed testosterone all over the country and bought the little woman a bungalow and an avocado-colored refrigerator. Rosie had to learn to mix martinis and play bridge, but she didn't have to worry her pretty little head over anything. A decade later, she was full of Valium.
