With liberal friends like this, women don't need any conservative enemies

During the last couple of years, I've visited many so-called liberal blogs and message boards, and when the subject of Condoleeza Rice comes up, I have noticed two trends:

1. Call her evil and then attack the way she looks and dresses.

2. Call her dim-witted and a tool of the administration.

I am no fan of Condoleeza Rice's ideology or policies, though I do find her to be the only multi-dimensional person in the administration. I want Rice out of office as much as the next person. But when it comes to evaluating her, I am appalled that the two criticisms I find over and over are "ugly" and "stupid." She is either part of the evil, but oh god, did you see those boots? Or she is too naive to realize she is a prop.

That, my think-you-are-liberal bloggers and message board writers, is sexism, and sexism is mean and bigoted, no matter who is being discussed. If that is the best you can do, then stop criticizing the Republican party for being filled with bigots. It's a pot/kettle thing.

Thanks for posting on this. I have also been very uncomfortable with a lot of the criticism of Rice veering into sexism. Her clothes and appearance should be off limits -- there's plenty to criticize on the merits of what she's done.

As to her wittedness, dim or otherwise, I honestly can't say I have a handle on it -- in theory, intellect seems to me to be fair game for criticism, but one should have a pretty good basis for coming to conclusions about the intellect of someone one doesn't know personally.

I do think she has sacrificed her integrity for the administration (witness her 9/11 testimony), which I would say counts as being a "tool", though that's obviously a vague term.

Oh yeah, she is a tool in that sense, but that isn't what they mean. They mean she is ignorant of what is going on around her and is just a prop. The implications are that she doesn't have a clue about America's foreign policy.

Thanks for the good post You raise a very valid point, and I heartily concur.

I think Rice is far from stupid, quite the opposite. She's just chosen to work with the dark side.

I agree with Fred: She has sacrificed her integrity, and that's what I dislike about her; not the way she dresses.

I, too, find it really offensive that when we criticize the boys, it's about their actions, but when we criticize the girls, it's their hairdo or sense of style, much of the time.

Mind you, I have compared Rice to Olive Oyl, because I just can't help it, being a cartoonist and huge Popeye fan and all, but then, I am an equal-opportunity disser when it comes to making fun of one's looks. In my mind, dubya IS Alfred E. Neuman (and on my blog from the other day as well).

If I am guilty of this sort of bigotry, I am glad that you point it out so that I can learn from it. Most women in this society are so very groomed (brain-washed?) toward this way of criticizing each other, and it's taken me quite a long time to sort of "de-program" myself.

I certainly hope I learn to catch myself when and if I do make the mistake, and I hope other women can take note as well.

Context is everything. If you're a standup comic, you have license to make fun of everyone. If you do cartoons of male and female politicians and office-holders,I don't see the sexism in that.

Olive Oyl?! I would never have thought of that. Some friends were over the other day and we were talking about Olive Oyl, for some reason. I think Anastasia Myskina looks a lot like her (I should add that I kind of like Myskina's look.)

Yes, I've felt uneasy about this as well. The snarks about her wanting to be Mrs. Bush, the rumors about her sexual orientation, the descriptions of her using various rodentia likenesses all seem to me to be cheap, vulgar, and totally missing the crticism she should be receiving as a lousy Sec of State and an even worse National Security Advisor.
