What does it mean that you "do a lot" for Africa when you are killing thousands?

Both Bob Geldof and Bono, organizers of the upcoming Live 8 concert, have been busily telling the news media how much Bush has done for Africa--"more than any American president," Geldof says. Geldof is using an "empirical" approach to draw his conclusions, he says. Nonsense. He is crunching numbers, not looking at reality.

The reality is ugly. Hundreds of thousands of women and children can now get AIDS more easily because of the Bush administration's Africa policy, and thousands of African women will continue to commit suicide because of botched abortions. The White House plan was to make pharmaceutical companies rich and enforce an extreme right-wing brand of Christianity on a nation of desperate women and their children.

The news media has ignored the Bush administration's organized effort to wipe out women and children in Africa. Geldof and Bono are sickening.

George Clooney and Pat Robertson made a huge point of saying that the Shrub has done lots for Africa on Nightline last night, too (probably not so difficult for Robertson). They were talking about the One campaign, the new bullshit contrived by Hollywood. If you haven't seen the commercials, check them out.

Now I am making no claim of being an expert on conditions in Africa or poverty in general. I do, however, know that any discussion of allieviating poverty has to include a discussion of women, seeing that women and children are the ones most affected by poverty. In addition, I know that there are numerous economic studies showing that the best way to end poverty is to educate women. However, none of these latest campaigns seem to be saying anything of the kind.

What they are is falling over themselves to kiss Bush's ass. Do they really think he's going to show up at G8 and have a sudden change of heart; that his "compassionate conservative" will finally show through, and he'll pledge millions of dollars to anything other than a new war? Bullshit.

How many US companies benefit from the civil war and poverty of an entire continent? Why in the world would Bush end what is essentially corporate colonization because a bunch of celebrities stroked his ego? How naive do they have to be?

I didn't know Clooney had gone over to the dark side. So much for him.

Wow, I started thinking the "One" campaign was fishy when it was reported that their bracelets were made by child labor, but now I'm really grossed out. I did suspect something right away - their emails to me had a sort of hi-definitely 'gloss' I can't quite explain. I guess for the greedy, egotistical and opportunistic, Africa's plight provides yet more photo ops for Hollywood stars, setting it up so they appear philanthropic when all they really do is let organizations like "One" use their headshots and probably make a huge profit off of it, to boot.

That is also really informative about Clooney. I am so tired of Hollywood stars being minimally informed or just oblivious of the actual facts before they make their statements, or minimally intelligent about them. I wonder if he truly believes what he said or if his publicist or others told him it was a valid thing to say, or position to stand upon. How could anyone who claims to want to help any third world country NOT know how damaging dubya is to all of them???!?!?! Damn. Sickening.

And Geldof and Bono SUCK if this is true. And believe me, I don't doubt you a bit.
