Anti-gay attack in Chapel Hill
I used to live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, back when UNC was called "the Berkeley of the South." Imagine my sadness to learn of this incident, which occurred this week on Franklin Street, the main drag of the small university city. I don't know if the victim was gay, or the goons simply thought he was gay, but one or another, it is bad news. A year ago, three men were arrested for attacking a UNC senior, Gagandeep Bindra, and calling him "Osama bin Laden."

Sadly this has been the result of right wing extreemest who have become very active on our campuses. It's the same at UNCG though much of it goes unreported. Several students have expressed fear that they are now unsafe and I personally know of one case where a student was set-up and faced charges on criminal counts that were conveintly dropped when he dropped out of classes.
Call it "Compassionate Conservatism" at work.

I'm so sad to read your "Berkeley of the South" comment, because I remember that, too. Sigh. I'm still here, but, as Blogging Poet says, some really creepy, right-wing elements have become obnoxiously (and noxiously) vocal. They're not the majority, but they're the loudest right now. They weren't the loudest Tuesday night though.
People are waking up to the fact that we need to take an active role in asserting our rights and freedoms. Otherwise, the loud, selfish ones drive the logic (such that it is). We'll divest ourselves of this scourge soon, I hope.

I'm very glad--and not surprisd--to hear about Tuesday night's event.
But I think it's sad that the victim has to make sure everyone knows he isn't really a victim, that he fought back, and that he isn't "weak." That says just as much about our culture as the attack does.
