Remembering Ferdinand

With the Kentucky Derby coming up in a few days, it is a good time to remember Ferdinand, who won the Derby in 1986. What becomes of a champion horse? Well, in 2002, Ferdinand was sent to Japan, where he was slaughtered for human consumption.

Really? I'm hardly surprised. Veblen always said that horses were the ultimate in upper-class accessories, and they are disposed of as easily. Poor Ferdinand. I guess the Derby isn't all juleps and enormous hats.
