Protecting civil liberties a "special interest"
Scott McClellan just called the ACLU a "special interest group." As a long-time member, I'd say yes, my civil liberties are pretty damned special to me.

Well, you can spread some of the blame over to the 1988 George H.W. Bush campaign. The year before, riffing on the McCarthy frenzy over "card-carrying Communists," Dukakis had declared himself a "card-carrying ACLU member." However, the Bush campaign took the phrase seriously and used it to smear Dukakis. Though ACLU membership has always been attacked by the ignorant, since then, the attacks have increased significantly.
